Pharmacology
Common name: American Buckthorn. Dried bark of American Buckthorn has laxative properties. Cascara bark was used as a laxative by Native Americans.
The active substance that acts as a laxative on the intestines is the anthraquinone found in the bark of buckthorn. Bowel evacuation occurs within 8-10 hours after taking cascara. Both traditional and scientific medicine use cascara as a laxative.
The German Federal Health Service recommends its use for constipation and conditions where gentle bowel evacuation with soft stools is desirable, such as anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and post-operative conditions following rectal surgery.
Under the action of digestive enzymes, anthraquinone is broken down into emodin and chrysophanic acid, which stimulates the receptors of the mucous membrane and enhances peristalsis of the large intestine, while the mucous membrane of the rest of the intestine remains unaffected. Therefore, Cascara Sagrada is a mild-acting laxative.

Народное название: Крушина американская. Высушенная кора крушины американской обладает слабительными свойствами. Кора каскары использовалась как слабительное ещё индейцами.
Активным веществом, действующими послабляющим образом на кишечник, является содержащийся в коре крушины антрахинон. Опорожнение кишечника происходит в течение 8-10 часов после приёма каскары. И народная, и научная медицина использует каскару как слабительное.
Государственная служба здравоохранения Германии рекомендует ее применение при запоре и тех заболеваниях, при которых желательно легкое, с мягким стулом, освобождение кишечника, как, например, трещины в анальной области, геморрой и состояние после оперативного вмешательства на прямой кишке.
Под действием пищеварительный ферментов антрахинон разрушается с образованием эмодина и хризафановой кислоты, что способствует раздражению рецепторов слизистой оболочки и усилению перистальтики толстого кишечника, при этом слизистая оболочка остальной части кишечника не раздражается. Поэтому Каскара Саграда является мягкодействующим слабительным средством.
