All of them are part of synovial fluid and are important components of cartilage. The salt forms of the components promote their faster and more complete absorption.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are natural metabolites of cartilage tissue.
Glucosamine is an amino monosaccharide, which is used by chondrocytes in the body as a raw material for the synthesis of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, and hyaluronic acid. The introduction of exogenous glucosamine enhances the production of cartilage matrix and provides nonspecific protection against metabolic destruction.
Chondroitin sulfate, whether absorbed in its intact form or as hydrolyzed fragments, serves as an additional substrate for the formation of healthy cartilage matrix. Chondroitin sulfate stimulates the formation of proteoglycans and type II collagens, protects the cartilage matrix from enzymatic degradation (by inhibiting the activity of hyaluronidase) and from the damaging effects of free radicals; maintains the viscosity of synovial fluid; serves as a basis for the synthesis of hyaluronic acid.
Sodium hyaluronate, a large polyanionic molecule, strengthens the connective structures of cartilage, tendons, and ligaments, increases elasticity, and inhibits inflammatory mediators. Hyaluronic acid, when binding with aggrecan monomers in the presence of a binding protein, endows intervertebral discs and other cartilages with load resistance.
