Folate is a natural water-soluble compound based on folic acid, which is generally considered vitamin B9. It is found in leafy greens, green vegetables, legumes, and more. The synthetic form of vitamin B9 is the well-known folic acid.
Folate is essential in the main metabolic processes that ensure physiological cell division and normal growth of all cells in the body. Folates regulate the concentration of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood, which, in excess, erodes the walls of blood vessels and leads to the development of atherosclerosis. A deficiency of folates also adversely affects the main blood-forming organ in humans - the bone marrow, provoking the development of anemia. The level of folates is particularly important for all women planning pregnancy, and it is recommended to start taking this vitamin several months before conception. This is necessary to restore the protective level of folates involved in the formation of the fetal neural tube - from which the spinal cord and brain of the child will subsequently develop.
The neural tube begins to form in the first days after conception: if there is a deficiency of folates in the body at this time, it can lead to neural tube defects. This can result in serious developmental disorders - hydrocephalus, anencephaly (absence of the brain), delays in mental and physical development, and spina bifida. According to statistics, approximately 300,000 children with anencephaly and spina bifida are born worldwide each year*. In addition, a deficiency of vitamin B9 during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, premature birth, and anemia.
Regular, artificially synthesized folic acid in tablets, like folates from food, does not possess biological activity on its own. To be absorbed and act, it must undergo a long and complex cycle of transformations, resulting in the only active form of folic acid - monoglutamate 5-MTHF, or methylfolate.

Фолаты незаменимы в основных обменных процессах, обеспечивающих физиологическое деление и нормальный рост всех клеток в организме. Нервная трубка начинает закладываться в первые же дни после зачатия: если к этому моменту в организме наблюдается недостаток фолатов, это может привести к дефектам нервной трубки. В дальнейшем это чревато появлением серьезных пороков развития - гидроцефалии, анэнцефалии (отсутствие головного мозга), задержки умственного и физического развития, расщепления позвоночника.
