Hydrastis canadensis, goldenseal - a low-growing herbaceous perennial plant found in the forested areas of Canada and the USA.
Chemical composition:
• hydrastine, specific to goldenseal;
• berberine, also found in other plants (Berberis vulgaris, Chelidonium majus, Sanguinaria canadensis);
• other minor alkaloids, including canadine.
Hydrastine and its oxide, hydrastinine, possess vasoconstrictive, hemostatic, and hypertensive effects, which give them venotonic and antihemorrhoidal properties.
