WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FROM OTHER FORMS OF VITAMIN B12?
Methylcobalamin belongs to the latest generation and is considered the most bioavailable form of vitamin B12 in terms of absorption and speed of action.
The main advantage by which methylcobalamin differs from cyanocobalamin is the retention time in the body. Thanks to the methyl group, this type of vitamin is retained longer, significantly increasing overall effectiveness (greater retention - more stable B12 levels).
The active coenzyme form is immediately involved in metabolic processes - without the need for conversion in the liver. This ensures rapid and effective action even with reduced gastrointestinal function or genetic features of B12 absorption.
Unlike cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin is a cofactor for methionine synthase - an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. This process is critically important for: maintaining normal homocysteine levels (elevated homocysteine is a risk factor for atherosclerosis and neurodegeneration); synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) - a universal donor of methyl groups involved in the methylation of DNA, phospholipids, neurotransmitters, and myelin; proper functioning of the nervous system, regeneration of neurons, and synthesis of neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine).
As a result, methylcobalamin: ensures effective ATP formation, participates in the energy metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids, reduces feelings of fatigue, and helps maintain physical endurance.
MECHANISM OF ACTION OF VITAMIN B12
Vitamin B12 is an essential micronutrient, particularly necessary for optimal hematopoietic and neurological function. Methylcobalamin plays an important role in the intracellular process of methylating homocysteine to methionine (folate-dependent cycle). Therefore, any deficiency of B12 will lead to hyperhomocysteinemia, which can have toxic effects on neuronal cells (especially on myelin sheaths) and vascular endothelium.
Methylcobalamin has neuroprotective effects as it participates in the remyelination of axons and supports the structural integrity of nervous tissue. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to demyelination of spinal and peripheral nerves, manifesting as paresthesias, sensory disturbances, ataxia, and cognitive disorders.
