Milk thistle has been known for its use in liver protection since Ancient Rome. Today, milk thistle is well-researched and widely used in many countries around the world, including Russia. The unique combination of flavonoids characteristic only to milk thistle is called silymarin.
Silymarin is one of the most well-known complexes of natural compounds today, which protects liver cells and helps maintain its functions.
Silymarin is a complex of flavonoids (flavolignans) from milk thistle, known for its ability to eliminate toxic substances both from external sources and those formed in the liver as a result of metabolism.
The ability of silymarin to protect the liver is due to its antioxidant function and its ability to strengthen cell membranes. Excessive accumulation of lipid peroxidation products is one of the main reasons for the decreased viability of liver cells (hepatocytes). This leads to a reduction in the strength of the lipid layer of cell membranes. Silymarin prevents the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products, thereby enhancing the protection of liver cells. Additionally, by stabilizing the cell membrane of hepatocytes, silymarin slows the entry of toxic substances into them. Silymarin also supports metabolic processes in the liver, resulting in even more active support of its functions.
