Naphazoline 0.1% Nasal Drops

Indications

Acute rhinitis (including against the background of acute respiratory diseases and allergic rhinitis), sinusitis, eustachitis, laryngitis, edema of the larynx of allergic origin, laryngeal edema due to radiation, hyperemia of the mucous membrane after surgeries on the upper respiratory tract. For stopping nasal bleeding.

Method of application and doses

Administered intranasally (in each nasal passage), adults and children over 15 years old are prescribed 1-3 drops of a 0.05% - 0.1% solution 3-4 times a day. For children over 2 years old, a 0.05% solution is used (or a 0.025% solution by diluting the 0.05% solution with distilled water): from 2 to 6 years - 1-2 drops, from 6 to 15 years - 2 drops 1-3 times a day. For diagnostic purposes - after clearing the nose, instill 3-4 drops into each nasal passage or insert a swab soaked in a 0.05% solution and leave for 1-2 minutes; in case of edema of the vocal cords, administer in small doses using a laryngeal syringe; in case of bleeding - insert a swab soaked in a 0.05% solution. Use for a short time, but no more than a week, no more than 3 days in children. If nasal breathing is eased, the use of Nafizine can be stopped earlier. Reapplication of the drug is possible after a few days. Before administering the drug, the nasal passages should be thoroughly cleared.

Composition per 1 ml:
Active ingredient: naphazoline nitrate (naftizin) - 1.0 mg.
Excipients: boric acid - 20 mg, purified water - up to 1 ml.

Description of the dosage form

Transparent colorless or slightly colored liquid.

• hypersensitivity to nafazoline or any of the excipients, arterial hypertension, pronounced atherosclerosis, thyrotoxicosis, severe eye diseases, including angle-closure glaucoma, chronic rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis, diabetes mellitus, tachycardia, simultaneous use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors and within 14 days after their discontinuation, for the 0.05% solution - children under 2 years of age, for the 0.1% solution - children under 15 years of age. With caution Ischemic heart disease (angina), prostatic hyperplasia, pheochromocytoma, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use during pregnancy and lactation: Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is only possible if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or child.

Special instructions

May have a resorptive effect.
With prolonged use, the intensity of the vasoconstrictive effect gradually decreases (a phenomenon known as tachyphylaxis), therefore it is recommended to take a break for several days after 5-7 days of use.

Section: Side Effects

Burning or dryness of the nasal mucosa; feeling of nasal "congestion" (reactive hyperemia after stopping the drug; swelling of the nasal mucosa), tachycardia, increased blood pressure. Headache, irritability, nausea, allergic reactions. Prolonged and frequent use of naphazoline may lead to chronic nasal passage obstruction and atrophy of the nasal mucosa (medication-induced rhinitis).

Section: Overdose

In case of an overdose of the drug due to systemic effects on the body, phenomena such as nervousness, increased sweating, headache, tremor, tachycardia, sensation of heartbeat, and increased blood pressure may develop. Possible signs of overdose also include nausea, cyanosis, respiratory and mental disorders. In cases of central nervous system depression, bradycardia, weakness, drowsiness, decreased body temperature, increased sweating, and collapse may be observed. Coma may develop very rarely. Treatment: gastric lavage, administration of activated charcoal (in case of accidental ingestion of the drug); symptomatic.

Interaction

It should not be used simultaneously with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or within 14 days after their use has ended. It slows the absorption of local anesthetics (prolongs their effect during surface anesthesia).

Pharmacodynamics

Alpha-adrenergic stimulating agent, it exerts a rapid, pronounced, and prolonged vasoconstrictor effect on the blood vessels of mucous membranes (reduces swelling, hyperemia, exudation). It facilitates nasal breathing in cases of rhinitis. Tolerance develops after 5-7 days.
