Properties
Phosphorus is a solid crystalline substance, completely colorless in its pure form, which transitions to red non-toxic phosphorus when heated. It smokes in the air, emitting a garlic-like odor, and glows in the dark while oxidizing; it easily self-ignites and ignites from friction (phosphorus translates to "light-bearing"). In nature, phosphorus does not occur in a free state due to its rapid oxidizability; it is found in mineral compounds in the form of phosphorite, mainly composed of calcium phosphate Ca3(PO4)2 and apatite, which contains, in addition to calcium phosphate, calcium fluoride CaF2 or calcium CaCl2.
