In healthy women, L-lactic acid is produced in the vaginal epithelium from glycogen with the participation of lactobacilli, which maintains an acidic pH (from 3.7 to 4.0) and promotes the growth of lactobacilli.
A low pH prevents the proliferation of undesirable microflora and ensures the hydration of the epithelium.
A marker of disruption of this complex feedback interaction is a shift in pH towards the alkaline side.
Such a shift in pH leads to the growth of undesirable microflora, feelings of dryness, itching, and burning in the vagina, especially during sexual relations.
To stabilize the acidic pH in the vagina and, consequently, ensure hydration, a healthy environment, and comfort during intimate relations, L-lactic acid has been included in the gel lubricant.
