Method of administration and doses

Orally. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a small amount of water.

Children aged 3 to 6 years: 200 mg (2 capsules) 3 times a day (interval between doses 8 hours), daily dose - 600 mg.
Children aged 6 to 18 years: 200 mg (2 capsules) 3-4 times a day (interval between doses 6-8 hours), daily dose - 600-800 mg.
Adults: 200 mg (2 capsules) 4 times a day (interval between doses 6 hours), daily dose - 800 mg.

Description of the dosage form

Hard gelatin capsules No. 0. The body and cap are yellow, opaque.
The contents of the capsules are a mixture of yellow powder and granules. Compaction of the contents of the capsules into lumps is allowed.

Special instructions

When treating diarrhea alongside nifuroxazide therapy, rehydration therapy must be conducted. In cases of bacterial diarrhea with signs of systemic involvement (deterioration of general condition, fever, symptoms of intoxication or infection), the issue of prescribing systemic antibacterial agents should be considered. If symptoms of hypersensitivity occur (shortness of breath, skin rash, skin itching), the use of the drug should be discontinued. Alcohol consumption is prohibited during therapy. Information on excipients: One single dose (200 mg) of the drug Nifuroxazide contains 70 mg of sucrose, which corresponds to 0.006 bread units (BE). The maximum daily dose (800 mg) contains 280 mg of sucrose, which corresponds to 0.023 BE. The drug Nifuroxazide contains the dye sunset yellow, which may cause allergic reactions.

Side effects

Overdose

Interaction

It is not recommended to use simultaneously with drugs that cause disulfiram-like reactions (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, tachycardia, blurred vision, weakness, seizures), with medications that depress the central nervous system. Nifuroxazide is an antimicrobial agent, a derivative of nitrofuran. It blocks the activity of dehydrogenases and suppresses respiratory chains, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and a number of other biochemical processes in the microbial cell. It destroys the membrane of the microbial cell and reduces the production of toxins by microorganisms.
It is highly active against Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio cholerae, pathogenic Vibrions, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus spp.
Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter cloacae, and Proteus indologenes are weakly sensitive to nifuroxazide.
Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Providencia spp., and Pseudomonas spp. are resistant to nifuroxazide.
Nifuroxazide does not disrupt the balance of intestinal microflora. In cases of acute bacterial diarrhea, it restores the eubiosis of the intestine. When infected with enterotropic viruses, it prevents the development of bacterial superinfection.

Pharmacokinetics

After oral administration, nifuroxazide is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and exerts its antibacterial action exclusively in the intestinal lumen. Nifuroxazide is excreted by the intestine: 20% in unchanged form, and the remaining amount of nifuroxazide - chemically modified.
