Psyllium is a fiber derived from the seed husks of Plantago ovata (psyllium seed). Psyllium is a rich source of insoluble and soluble fiber, which helps normalize intestinal function and contains poorly digestible carbohydrates that positively affect its microflora. Due to its properties, psyllium is well-suited for individuals following a low-carbohydrate diet, the main issue of which is a lack of fiber, which psyllium effectively addresses.
Adding psyllium to the diet will also benefit those who do not follow specific diets, as fiber supports intestinal health. It is in the intestines that nutrients are absorbed by the body and enter the bloodstream, and then into the cells; a deficiency of these nutrients due to impaired intestinal function can seriously affect the overall state of the body.

Information about biologically active substances and their properties:
Psyllium consists of a polymer rich in arabinose and xylose, which has limited digestibility for humans. Some intestinal bacteria can utilize these compounds as an energy source, so it can be considered that psyllium has prebiotic properties. The effect of prebiotics manifests in supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria for the body and increasing the production of fatty acids that positively influence colon health.

The feature of psyllium is that it is composed of 80-85% fiber, part of which (soluble) forms a gel upon contact with water. 1 g of fiber powder can absorb up to 45 ml of water. In the intestines, the gel releases excess water into its lumen, softening the intestinal contents, thereby increasing its volume. The increase in pressure within the intestines stimulates intestinal peristalsis, which promotes faster passage of its contents.
Psyllium may help normalize cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as contribute to a greater feeling of fullness and reduced hunger between meals.
